Since I never had to go to school on my birthday (I have a summer birthday), I am determined to never make Bryson go to school on his birthday. This year we both took the day off and took Bryson to the McWane center. We were hoping to take him to the zoo but it was way too cold to take him. He had never been and it had been a long time since I had been so I wasn't sure how he would like it. He loved it! We started on the 3rd floor which had an exhibit called Grossology. It was pretty boring but there were a few things there that Bryson liked. He got to play with a giant Lite Brite and play in a submarine. After we were finished there, we headed to the "aquarium" floor. I really thought it was going to be a really cool aquarium, but it was a disappointment. I don't know what more I expected from something in Birmingham but it was a real let down. Bryson seemed to like it though and that's all that matters. Once we were done there we headed to the main floor with all the fun activities to do. Most of the activities were geared toward older children but they have a special section that is just for children under the age of 5. Bryson loved it there. It had a giant indoor playground and a water table. I think he could have stayed at the water table forever, but we wanted to explore some more. We headed to the bubble section but none of the bubbles really worked so we went to the dinosaur exhibit. Bryson had fun digging for dinosaur bones but it was mostly just exhibits about science and history that were way over his head. He did have a good time though. I think his favorite thing on that floor was when he built a "choo-choo train". They had all these foam pieces laid out to build with. He had so much fun doing that. They have a food court with a fairly nice selection of stuff. We were hoping to find a cupcake or something like that celebrate with, but they didn't so we settled for yogurt. Bryson wanted strawberry yogurt with Fruity Pebbles on it. It actually wasn't too bad! I'm not sure if we will go back again too soon since there wasn't much for him to do, but if we do, I think we will spend the day in the 5 and under section. Here are some pictures from the McWane center.
It's kind of become tradition for Bryson to eat at Lucia's on his birthday and have their amazing strawberry cake for dessert, but sadly they closed down. Thankfully their family has another restaurant (Joe's Italian) with the same strawberry cake so we ate there with Robert's family. Me and Bryson shared a pizza and he opened a few gifts. After dinner he got his strawberry cake! The staff came out with the accordion player and sang happy birthday to him. He didn't know what to think. He just kept staring at them.
After dinner we headed home and put on our pajama's so we could watch Peter Pan. It had been a long day and Bryson only napped in the car so he fell asleep before we finished it but first thing Saturday monring he wanted to watch it and he loved it! We got a special treat the day after his birthdya too! It snowed! Not enough to stick but just enough to look pretty. The ironic thing is, it snowed the day after he was born three years ago and this year it snowed the day after his birthday! Since we had dinner with Robert's family on his birthday, me and Bryson went to lunch at Cracker Barrel with my parents while Robert ran a 5k in the snow. The staff sang him happy birthday with a Coca-Cola cake and again, he just stared at them. He didn't know what to think!
